Description
The ACEC/MN Emerging Professionals are excited to host our last event before we break for summer, the Historic 3rd Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Tour and Brewery Social.

The 3rd Avenue Bridge spans 1,888 feet across the Mississippi River between downtown Minneapolis and St. Anthony Main to the north. The open spandrel concrete arch bridge was constructed between 1914 and 1917 and is located within the St. Anthony Falls Historic District. In 2017, MnDOT retained a team led by HNTB to perform bridge inspection and condition assessment, as well as load rating, alternatives study, and rehabilitation design. Deteriorated original and rehabilitated elements warranted extensive concrete repair and full deck and spandrel replacement in order to extend the bridge service life for another 50 years. Repairs to this bridge present particular challenges because of the bridge’s unique design and the constrained site access created by the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam. Construction led by Ames Construction began in 2020 and is expected to be completed in early 2023. The tour will be led by MnDOT and will focus on the column, cap beam and deck reconstruction with unique staging sequences as well as historic concrete surface repairs.

PARKING INSTRUCTIONS
Parking is available in the construction staging area or on the closed section of the street. Project personnel will be available to assist in finding a parking spot. Use the address above to get to the right location. An aerial view of the staging area is below. We are on the north/east side of the river, so take 35W to SE 4th Street then turn left on 5th Avenue SE and then right on 2nd Street SE. This will take you into the closed section of roadway at 2nd Avenue and you will find the construction staging area. Note that parking in the staging area is limited so you may need to park on the street.
