Presentation: Mass Concrete Underwater and in Layers (and Sometimes, Both)
Description: Presentation will briefly review mass concrete concepts and mass concrete in ACI 301, followed by case studies of underwater mass concrete pours, mass concrete poured in multiple lifts, and the intersection of the two. Underwater mass concrete case studies will be used to highlight common environmental circumstances for underwater mass concrete pours related to water temperature, water flow rate, pour depth, and diver safety. Case studies about pouring mass concrete in lifts will show that there is a common misconception about time needed between lifts. Finally, underwater mass concrete pours can sometimes be multi-layered mass concrete pours. A case study will be used to convey the considerations required when this happens.
Presenter: Mary Vancura, P.E.
Bio: Mary brings a blend of academic rigor and hands-on industry experience, having worked across civil, structural, environmental, materials testing, and concrete repair engineering for more than 20 years. Her background spans concrete design, batching, testing, pavement evaluation, and failure investigation. Mary provides firsthand insight into how concrete is specified, produced, placed, tested, and ultimately performs in the field. Vancura is a part of and actively involved in ACI, ICRI, NSPE, PEX, and the Minnesota Concrete Conference planning committee. She is a registered PE in multiple states.
