An ACEC/MN Workshop Series for Younger Professionals
ACEC/MN will once again be holding a workshop series titled “Consulting Engineering Fundamentals,” designed to give younger and/or newer engineers some insight into the business side of consulting engineering. Led by seasoned consulting engineering professionals, the series looks beyond nuts and bolts engineering to subjects not often taught in engineering school to give these younger/newer engineers an introductory education into a variety of areas.

Who should attend:
Most participants are employees of ACEC/MN member firms (mechanical/structural/electrical engineers, EITs, drafters, technicians, etc.) with up to six years of experience.

WORKSHOP SERIES SCHEDULE:

Workshop #1   Overview: The Big Picture & Working with Clients
Includes topics such as what consulting engineer’s do, opportunities within a CE firm, the role of a consulting engineer in society, professional registration, how each part of the project fits into the overall time and money budgets, what owners look for in people to advance to management/leadership positions. The second half of the workshop will cover marketing, client management, communication, services, overview of client bases, who clients are, why we work for architects and others

Workshop #2   Interpersonal Communication
The importance of effective communication, how to write a business letter and report, how and when to communicate technical solutions to clients, teamwork, negotiation skills, look and act the part, commitment, how to relate to clients

Workshop leader:
Doug Cooley – Michaud Cooley Erickson (mechanical)

Workshop #3   Construction Delivery Methods
Includes discussion on available methods of delivery, roles and responsibilities of others, project team

Workshop leader:
Dave Blume – Gausman & Moore (mechanical/electrical)

Workshop #4   Financial and Office Practices
Fees, budgets, billing and accounts receivable, financial statements, filing and job files, shop drawings, computer files

Workshop leaders:

Workshop #5   Risk Management, Insurance & Legal Issues
Includes brief codes and standards, who to call for answers/resources, contracts, legal ramifications of various forms of communication, conflict resolution, insurance
