Description
What do you do when you have more downdrag load than structural pile capacity? Atlas Foundation Company was faced with this question for an oilfield project in western North Dakota in 2014. In conjunction with the project’s geotechnical engineer, Atlas Foundation Company installed secondary bond-breaker piles to reduce the overall downdrag load caused by 15 feet of new sand fill placed over 55 feet of native soft clay. This allowed smaller sized bearing piles to be used for the project resulting in significant cost savings for the owner without additional scheduling delays.
Speakers: Mike Moeller has a bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1974). He is the president of Atlas Foundation Company and president of Structural Anchor Supply, the distributor of Chance™ helical products for nine states in the Upper Midwest.
Corey Reese, PE, has been a construction engineer for Atlas Foundation Company since 2014 and involved in deep foundation engineering since 2006. Corey holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL.
