Description
Case study discussing some of the challenges and considerations taken when working adjacent historic structures.
The presentation will discuss:
- The utilization of soil solidification to underpin and shore the existing structures
- Complications and challenges unique to many of these historic sites.
- Utilization of a variety of retention systems to help mitigate costs.
- Strengths and weaknesses of a variety of retention/shoring systems.
The Westminster Church in Minneapolis was constructed in 1897. In 2016 the church began one of the most extensive additions to date, by removing the adjacent 1221 Nicollet building and parking ramp and began construction of a new space to expand the church’s offerings and community presence. The demolition of the adjacent building and the subsequent excavation for the new addition required extensive underpinning of the existing historic church as well as retention of the adjacent roadways and structures. The adjacent excavation was 26 feet in depth and required retention and underpinning to extend up to 2 stories below grade.
The End End development in Minneapolis called for the demolition of existing Grainger building, but also required significant underpinning under both the Thresher Building(1904) and the Old Spaghetti Factory in the JJ Case Building (1907).

Nate Iverson, Veit’s Senior Geotechnical Engineer, is a registered professional engineer and a project manager at Veit. Nate has 15 years of experience in implementation and design of many types of specialized foundations for structures, including drilled piers, down hole hammer installed piers, auger cast piles, driven piles, helical piles, resistance piers, and micro-piles. His experience makes him uniquely qualified to tackle tough foundation projects that require innovative solutions.
