Description
The Application of Structural Engineering in Emergency Response
There are multiple ways structural engineers can provide assistance following a disaster, both as a first responder and as a second responder. This presentation discusses the types of assistance structural engineers might provide in the aftermath of various disasters and offers case studies from recent incidents.
Presenter: Colby Baker, PE - Structural Forensic Engineer at U.S. Forensic
Mr. Baker obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering from Purdue University and is a registered professional engineer in multiple states. He has performed numerous forensic investigations regarding the cause and extent of damage to commercial, residential, and industrial building structures and systems. Mr. Baker currently serves as an Advanced Structures Specialist with North Carolina Emergency Management and chairs the Structural Engineers Emergency Response (SEER) Committee of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA). Previously, he served as an Advanced Structures Specialist with the Michigan Task Force 1 (MI-TF1) Urban Search and Rescue Team and as an on-call firefighter and emergency medical technician with the City of Farmington Hills, Michigan.
