Description
The presentation will discuss the difference between self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mix design versus standard wet cast and dry cast mixes used in precast construction. The presentation will also highlight the use of this type of concrete in a unique project located in Hibbing, MN where box culvert sections were used as pedestrian tunnels and “look-out” points for the Hull Rust Mine visitors center.
Topics to be discussed include:
- Precast construction basics and the box culvert production process
- General mix design characteristics and key properties for long-term performance
- Self-consolidating concrete technology overview and comparison
- Uses and applications for SCC mixes in precast
- Hibbing Hull-Rust Mine View project overview and the unique application of precast box culverts.
Speakers:
- Riley Dvorak is the technical resource engineer for Forterra in the MN region serving as the liaison between Forterra and the design community. He graduated with a civil engineering degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Riley has been widely involved in the precast industry since beginning his venture with Forterra in 2012.
- John Kallemeyn is the materials and quality engineer for Forterra in the Midwest North regions serving as technical support for the plants and customers. He graduated with a chemical engineering degree from University of Minnesota, Duluth. John has been developing precast concrete since 2009.
