Description
When designing and specifying storm sewer and culvert lines, civil engineers and design technicians must not only size the pipes for hydraulic capacity – they must also determine the structural requirements for the pipe – that is, how strong does the pipe need to be in order to sufficiently resist dead (soil) and live (traffic) loading? This seminar is about storm sewer and culvert pipe strength-related issues.

- Bedding factors for concrete pipe – what are they, and how do they influence required pipe strength
- Trench vs embankment conditions & vertical arching factors
- Soil and traffic load characterizations

Determining concrete pipe strength: design examples using fill height tables and PipePac software
Jason Kruger is a 1988 Civil Engineering graduate of Iowa State University and has worked his entire 25 year career in the concrete and cement industries. As Technical Resource Director for the Minnesota Concrete Pipe Association (MnCPA), Kruger educates Minnesota civil engineers, design technicians and field inspectors on proper design and installation of concrete pipe. He also partners with the Minnesota DOT, cities, counties and consulting firms to improve their storm sewer and culvert design standards and specifications.
