TKDA’s Matt Christensen named VP of Surface Transportation

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — TKDA, an employee-owned provider of engineering, architecture and planning services, has named Matt Christensen, PE, as the firm’s new vice president of the Surface Transportation Division.

Christensen joined TKDA as a graduate engineer in 1999, and most recently was the manager of the firm’s bridge group. He takes over the division’s leadership position from longtime Vice President Kevin Cullen, PE, who retired in 2020.

His more than two decades of design and project management experience at TKDA has focused on bridge construction and rehabilitation projects. He has led the development and implementation of improved methods for analysis, design and plan production within the firm’s bridge group. He has served as lead bridge engineer and project manager for large, multidisciplinary transportation projects, and leads construction inspection and administration teams for construction projects designed by TKDA.

Recently, Christensen served as consultant project manager with project partners Ramsey County, MnDOT and the City of Saint Paul on the nearly complete $11.8 million Dale Street reconstruction project over I-94. He also served as the lead bridge engineer on the $50 million MnDOT design-build pavement rehabilitation, bridge replacement and interchange improvement project on I-35 within the cities of Columbus, Forest Lake and Lino Lakes.

Christensen’s key clients include the Minnesota Department of Transportation, BNSF Railway Company, the cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Anoka County, and other municipal and county entities across the state and across the country.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have Matt step up to this key role in our company,” said Tom Stoneburner, TKDA president and CEO. “He is a great longtime employee, a respected engineer and a proven leader.”

Christensen has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Master of Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis, both from the University of Minnesota. He also works with young engineering students through the Capstone Project at the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul.
